A test harness does exist in the sources, IIRC, in the directory
test-harness.  There is a README.  It was always prototype code, but
for what it did it worked.   It could test:

   rollback mechanisms
   erasures
   installs
   upgrade

It would need to be expanded to in a straight fowrward way cover other things.
