(aside) I've added a CC to <rpm-devel@rpm5.org>.

Try <rpm-devel@rpm5.org> instead. I'd really like to
get rpm-5.x (or rpm-4_5 or any version later than 4.4.6) stabilized
in Gentoo.

I'm more than willing to help with whatever changes may be needed, I  
just don't know
Gentoo all that well, and what problems are being reported.
