I just went back to dig out the --import reproducer using rpm-5.2- 
DEVEL and failed.

So the explanation is more likely rpm.org <-> rpm5.org incompatibilities
than any change you made. Apologies for mis-guessing the cause, your
fixing is likely perfectly OK.
