IIRC, there are several flip-flops with MakeMaker in perl over the  
years.

I'm not sure that tracking the inner details of MakeMaker is gonna
enhance portability. Likelier imho is that there are certain versions
of MakeMakemaker that just should not be used.

But its possible atm to attempt --with-perl that will
fail if MakeMaker is not present. A simple test on
the existence of the path to the MakeMaker module
might help there.

OTOH, MakeMaker is traditionally assumed to be installed with
perl, so perhaps leaving bad enuf alone is best.
