After years (since ~2000) of privately encouraging that LSB document
RPMv4 format, I've decided the only way forward is to take
the existing RPMv3 specification (which is pretty good, just
incomplete and not used anywhere important for several years),
rewrite in as non-controversial a fashion as possible, and
hand the document back to LSB (and perhaps IETF).
Documenting the existing RPMv4 format currently in use
almost everywhere should have obvious benefits for everyone,
including
distros, vendors, developers, users.
A publically accessible mailing list has been setup at
<rpm-lsb@rpm5.org>
and invitations have been sent to all vendor RPM maintainers
inviting participation. The list will be open as long as the
focus remains on the rather narrow goal of documenting
the existing widely deployed RPMv4 format acceptably
for LSB and IETF.
Suggestions for additional topics are welcomed.
I hope to start in mid-January, and have a completed document
by the end-of-March or so.
