That's strange, so it's definetly not due to an error in the sources.

I adapted the RPM 4.4.6 source and spec file from wraptastic.org (only some 
minor cosmetic changes). I used this Spec file to build 4.4.8 and did nothing 
but change the file list where needed. I had some patches which I included 
(e.g. support for the RPMv3 file format), but leaving them out of the build 
process didn't show any improvement.

I'll try building RPM-4.4.8 from the .src.rpm this evening and report back.
