Argh, no wonder you were confused, I totally typoed the subject line :(
(I meant 'how not to lose' rpm owner/group info on unpack)

I will investigate this further tomorrow. It is possible that somehow
rpm2cpio does try to output user/group in the cpio archive it outputs, but
fails, or outputs it in a format that cpio on linux doesn't recognize.
