If MacPorts could provide a RPM based distribution, may be need for recreating a new distribution may be less urgent. 

Better if they push dependencies in ... RPMs. 

MacPorts team did a tremendous works and duplicating effort may not be mandatory. 

About RPM on MacPorts, could it be updated to 5.4.7 ?
